Umrongso is a Municipal Board in district of Dima Hasao, Assam. The Umrongso town is divided into 10 wards for which elections election has been not yet conduct.

Umrongso is one of the four towns of Dima Hasao (earlier North Cachar Hills District), the others being Haflong (district headquarter), Mahur and Maibang. It is a part of “Switzerland of the East” as adoringly described by the visitor to the place. Umrongso town is named after the River “Umrong” which flow along the west side of the Town. The “Umrong” river has two Dams Umrongso and Khandong presently operated by NEEPCO for Hydro Electric project. River “Umrong” is tributary of Kopili. Umrongso is an elegant hill tract of Dima Hasao and is endowed with flora and fauna of great varieties. It is covered with the herbs, shrubs, climbers and grasses which impart a unique vegetative feature to the region. Umrongso is the only Industrial town in the district, there is a renowned company such as Dalmia Bharat Cement Ltd. The Umrongso Town is notified in 1990. The Umrongso Town can be described as a small museum of multi ethnicity where different castes and communities comprising Karbi, Dimasa, Hmar, Nepali, Bengali, Assamese, Bihari and other indigenous Tribes. Umrongso Town situated at the border of Assam and Meghalaya in the District of DimaHasao (earlier N.C Hills), it is 224 kilometer south east of Guwahati, the state capital, 112 kilometer south of Haflong the District head quarter.

Umrongso is located at 250 32” North and 920 49” East latitudes and longitudes respectively. Umrongso is at an elevation of 580 M from mean sea level. Umrongso town is 112Km North of Haflong, the district headquarter of Dima Hasao. Umrongso is 224Km south east of Guwahati, the capital city of Assam.
